The Tournament Book of Gašper Lamberger, which is preserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, is one of those beautiful chivalric books which were produced after the year 1500 in Holy Roman Empire, following the model of Emperor Maximilian's Freydal, Weisskunig, and others.
One of the best-known of Maximilian's friends and military commanders was Gašper Lamberger II (circa 1436-1515), who held the castle Kamen in Slovenia. After leaving the royal service he returned home and commissioned from a painting workshop in Germany a book with miniatures of this tournament combats.
The book contains 87 folio-pages depicting in water-colour Gašper's equestrian duels with highly renowned tournament contestants from west and Central Europe. The miniatures finely depict the conduct of tournament duels, their consequences, and the rich tournament caparisons.
The second part of the book presents the mottoes and inscriptions of more than 200 eminent persons from West and Central Europe, who frequently visited
Gašper's son Jakob II at the Kamen Castle and in Ljubljana. The author of the extensive commentary »The Time of the warriors« is Dr. Dušan Kos.
